Exciting Notes from School

Katie's intervention specialist at school sent me the following note this morning that I wanted to share:

I have been meaning to e-mail you to let you know about some things here. Katie is just moving right along. She is doing such a great job with the reading program that we are working on, where she listens to a story, I show her a copied page from the book, hand her a set of words. and tell her to "make a sentence" about the picture. She puts them in order, and then I tell her to "read the sentence" (which means she has to sign the sentence as I point to each word.) She is doing this so well, we are now making new ones(AGAIN!:) that are harder books. :) She is also able to read (sign) books, whole books!!!!!!!! Wanda is so excited! :)

Today I started teaching her to "partner read," which is something that the kids do in the general ed class. It is when they read a book together--one person reads one page, and the other person reads the next, etc. We also had Katie start reading her books to her friend in class instead of the peer reading a book to her!!!! And soon, we will have her partner read with them!

Another big thing we are working on with her, that I think I might have mentioned at our last meeting, is teaching her to understand that a response is required when someone asks her a question. Wanda is adding an obvious question mark sign at the end of each sentence. She says that typically in sign, a facial expression is the way to determine a question, but Katie isn't always paying attention to Wanda's face, so we thought the question mark sign at the end may help. Today is the first day that she answered a question for us!!!! This is such an exciting skill for her to learn as it will help with SO many things, like reading comprehension, conversation, requests, choices, etc, etc, etc!!!

Also, we are ready to move on with the touchmath. We are teaching her the numbers 6-9, where the dots are, etc so that she will be ready to add larger numbers very soon! [She can already add numbers 1-5!]

I would love to send a couple of books home with her this weekend for you to read with her, if you would like! :) We are all so excited about all of this! Katie is such an amazing kid! :)

Way to go, Katie!!! We are SO proud of you!!
